About
My name is Sharon M Godwin, a freelance illustrator and surface pattern designer from Kent, England. My drawings and designs are a mixture of wildlife, farmlife, sealife and scenic art. My grandparents were farmers and my mother lived on a farm throughout her childhood and told me some wonderful stories. I myself grew up near a farm, woodlands and by the sea which is where I take inspiration from. My love for drawing is apparent since a young age and has been ever since. Ideas usually come easily to me being surrounded by nature and wildlife I am fascinated by all living things and being able to go out and explore I love taking photos for inspiration and sketching ideas and by having the ability to draw from my own imagination I am able to create my own unique drawings that are decorative and rich in detail and I love the freedom of expression. My style of drawing can be time consuming depending on the complexcity especially with stippling art (dotwork), but it is therapeutic and I enjoy it.
Drawings are hand drawn on paper using mechanical pencils for light sketching and black fineliner ink pens to finish. I prefer using these tools because they are so versatile, I love the smooth flow of the ink when it is applied to paper and love drawing with black ink because it stands out well on a white background with a bold and classic look. Creating my surface pattern designs I scan my drawings in and then using design software I convert my drawings into a pattern repeat and love the whole process, including experimenting with composition and sizing. I don't like drawing directing onto a digital device as I love the natural handmade and human feel of my work where not every line or dot is perfect. When i'm not busy drawing I like to do other creative things.
